Thanks to Chris Webster , Georg.Denk@MATHEMATIK.TU-MUENCHEN.DBP.DE, "Dwight Lemke @ Wisconsin Oshkosh" , and Les.Ferch@mtsg.ubc.ca for their help. I received many similar replies like the following: >Configure your mac in such a way >that the volumes with the old desktop file are mounted during the >start-up. During the next start-up press the clover and alt keys. You >will be asked for every volume whether you want to rebuild the desktop >Click in cancel for the volumes you don't want to rebuild BUT keep the >two keys pressed, until the appropriate volume appears. This was the >way I rebuilt the desktop. Other replies suggested: >A crude (but effective) way to accomplish this would be to use a file editor >(such as that with Norton Utilities) or ResEdit and make the desktop files >visible--then just delete them and restart. One person suggested using the public domain program DesktopReset which should rebuild the desktop in a "more elegant way" than the Finder. Unfortunately, due to Novell's unique handling of the Desktop file, none of these suggestions worked. I found the following information by searching the Novell Usenet group using WAIS (source=Novell_IDX). Summary: It seems that Desktop files on Novell file servers "Sooner or later" get corrupted, and no one has been able to rebuild a Novell fileserver volume from System 7 due to Novell's unique handling of the Desktop file. :-( - Brad Stone Computing Support Coordinator Brigham Young University Brad_Stone@byu.edu ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 27 Jan 1992 17:50:40 GMT Reply-To: Novell LAN Interest Group Sender: NOVELERR@SUVM.ACS.SYR.EDU Comments: Warning -- original Sender: tag was NETNEWS@AUVM.AMERICAN.EDU From: "Gary W. Yes, I think Novell will have to address this issue against the day when System 6 is completely outmoded... (no time soon...) I still keep System 6 machines around... but if I wanted to run System 7 exclusively, I could still have a couple machines with System 6 system folders tucked away on them, and use a utility like System Picker to reboot with System 6 temporarily. Or, obviously, a System 6 boot diskette with the necessary appletalk files to connect to servers on your network would work as well... ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 27 Jan 1992 08:19:52 PST Reply-To: Novell LAN Interest Group Sender: NOVELERR@SUVM.ACS.SYR.EDU From: Michael Perrone Subject: Re: Rebuilding Desktop files from SYS7 Macs... Hmmm... We've never had that happen here. I do believe it's a good idea to clear and rebuild the desktop every few months or so, just for garbage collection. - This problem CANNOT be fixed using VREPAIR - you have to clear - the desktop using AFP cdt, then rebuild it from a Mac client. - - The question is: HOW do you rebuild the desktop from a Mac running - System 7 (the answer appears to be that you can't)? I have looked into this, and as far as I can tell, the only way to do this is to boot from system 6. System 7 just can't be forced to rebuild the desktop on a file server. I suggest keeping a system 6.08 configured floppy disk on hand for this. I have found this quite workable. I have it set to boot for 'Finder Only' so that all the application heap is available for the finder to work with. ================================================================== From: "Robert H. The manual states that you can be the only person logged into the -server as supervisor, and before attaching the filesystem, keep the Control -and Option key pressed down so it can rebuild the desktop (p. 104 of the -Mac NLM Installation and Maintance manual). It also mentions a bit I was not able to rebuild the desktop this way since my Mac runs system 7. I booted my Mac with a system 6 diskette and then could rebuild the server's desktop. [stuff deleted]
